Hydrokemos commercializes its electrodenitrification system for the remediation of wastewater contaminated by nitrate and ammonia

  1. Hydrokemos starts the prototypes commercialization after the excellent results achieved on the treatment of wastewater produced during the gas washing process in a pickling facility of a powerful metallurgical multinational company.

  1. The Hydrokemos electrodenitrification process has been developed to reduce nitrate contamination levels from 10.000 to 1.000mg/L.

  1. The treatment for each reduced Kg is 1,10€, and up to 15 kilos of nitrate per day can be converted to nitrogen with the Hydrokemos’s prototype.

HYK-HNR remediation plant for metallurgical industry

The achieved results in these six months application of the Hydrokemos’ electrodenitrification in the wastewater remediation from metallurgical industry’s pickling facilities have exceeded our best expectations” declared Ruth Canicio, Hydrokemos’ CEO, after the final experimental results report presentation of six month treating the highly contaminated wastewater produced at metallurgical company. Frequently, the final finish of metallic pieces involves a pickling treatment followed by a polish which requires the use of nitric acid. Toxic gases, concretely nitrogen oxides, produced during the process are absorbed by water at scrubbers that generate highly nitrate concentrated wastewaters.

Hydrokemos suggested to the EU Commission, within the WATIFY (SME-711501) granted project of H-2020, the construction and in situ trials for six month using a demonstrative prototype to treat this kind of water. The experimental results have been amazing from the technical and economical point of view. The prototype reduced the initial nitrate concentration, 10.000mg/L, to 1.000mg/L followed by a dilution with other nitrate-free wastewater generated during the production process. The operation cost achieved with electrodenitrification plant is 14,8 kW-h per each Kg reduced. Assuming an electrical cost of 0,075€/kW-h, the whole operation costs are 1,10€/Kg. The prototype HYK-HNR converts 15Kg of nitrate per day.

Ruth Canicio the economic competitiveness and environmental sustainability of Hydrokemos procedure against the conventional treatment process, external wastewater management. “Our process, in addition to much more economical”, she says, “is the only one technology that closes the nitrogen cycle, returning the nitrogen fixed as nitrate to make ammonia and nitric, to the atmosphere as nitrogen form”.

The Hydrokemos’ achieved experience at the metallurgical industry serves to start the commercialization step, where the treatment proposed will be able to either reduce nitrate, ammonia or both.

The wastewater application is not limited to the metallurgical pickling, but also be used on leachate effluents of landfills treatment, pharmaceutical wastewaters, industrial dumping, gas scrubbing waters for the denitrification or desulphuritzation (thermal power plants and ordinary industry) an, generally, waters rich in any nitrogen form except, for now, those rich in organic nitrogen.
