Potabilization plant developed by Hydrokemos S.L. company was inaugurated on 23th November. Catalan water research institute (ICRA) will analyse the quality of water produced for the following four months. After ICRA’s validation, and after operational changes if there are required, drinkable water produced by the module will be connected to the distribution network to supply this resource to Borrassà town population and fields.

Potabilization plant is located next to the municipal tank storage with a capacity of 200m3. The investment to build-up the device was 200k€ where 70% of the budget came from the SME instrument of the European Commission and 30% from Girona public health organism, Dipsalut.

Disruptive technology developed by Hydrokemos company supported by Dipsalut is based on electrodenitrification technique which converts nitrate into nitrogen and oxygen whose are chemically innocuous for environment.

In opposite to conventional treatment techniques, electrodenitrification tranforms nitrate into nitrogen without by-products generation such as brackish water which is produced on available technologies whose require posttreatment operation that increases the operational cost of those systems. Moreover, denitrification technique from Hydrokemos used the total amount of available water and does not require any chemical reactive during its continuous operation. Operational cost measured during the test is 0.2-0.3€ per m3 of treated water which is much lower than the cost achieved by best available techniques (BAT) present on the market.

Potabilization plant operates in continuous mode and, at the end of the treatment, quality parameters such as nitrate concentration, ORP, pH and free chlorine are monitored to accomplish with WHO (world health organization) normative. If the treated water is in accordance to directive then it is connected to public drinkable network.

The technology has been tested two times with satisfactory results at pilot scale. Tests made at Borrassà and Caldes de Malavella confirmed the technical viability of Hydrokemos S.L. system. The industrial plant installed will be able to produce more than 100m3 per day using contaminated by nitrates water available in Borrassà.

It is expected to expand the technology around other towns affected by the same nitrate contamination problem to reduce this Catalan problematic which is representative in more than the 20% of the overall region.

Hydrokemos is a Sarria Chemical Institute (IQS) spin-off founded at 2008 by PhD. José-Alfonso Canicio and directed by Ruth Canicio, Hydrokemos SL CEO. The company has two main partners which are Abisum and Victoria Venture Capital.

Hydrokemos SL is located at Torelló and it has laboratory facilities at Barcelona inside IQS building. The team is formed by 9 members and the collaboration from PhD. José-Alfonso Canicio as a chemical consultant, president of dr. Canicio consulting chemist.
